The Premier League has confirmed the video assistant referee upheld the on-field referee's decision to award Liverpool a penalty against Bournemouth after deeming that replays showed Lewis Cook tripped Cody Gakpo in the area.

The initial decision looked soft, and from one camera angle, it looked as though Gakpo tripped over his own legs, but another angle showed that Cook did make contact with the Dutch forward.

Cook did not contest the decision, suggesting he might have known he had fouled Gakpo, and a Premier League statement said: "The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed to have been a trip by Cook on Gakpo. The VAR also confirmed Gakpo was onside in the build-up."

After the on-field decision was confirmed, Mohamed Salah stepped up to hand Liverpool the lead as he slammed home from 12 yards.

Salah's goal took him onto 177 Premier League goals in his career, level with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, and also took him onto the 20-goal mark for this top-flight season.

Liverpool started the match slowly, and a couple of defensive mistakes from Trent Alexander-Arnold gifted Bournemouth opportunities to threaten Alisson's goal, but the Cherries were unable to take full advantage.

The Reds settled into the match as the first half went on, and by half-time they were good value for their one-goal lead.
