Rasmus Hojlund was sarcastically cheered off by Manchester United fans when he was substituted against Fulham. Then the 17-year-old who replaced him from the bench looked more of a goal threat.

Chido Obi came close to winning the game for United and he might have won a penalty if he'd gone to the ground after winning a tussle with Fulham defender Calvin Bassey in the box.

Ruben Amorim said Obi was "a little bit naive" but he admitted it was a "good day" for the youngster, who further enhanced his first-team credentials with another pleasing display.

Obi had three big chances in 52 minutes against Fulham, despite signs of greenness. He is not ready to be starting Premier League games, but Hojlund has had just three big chances in 22 topflight appearances and Obi's cameos haven't done the out-of-sorts striker any favours.

Hojlund is five years older than Obi and doesn't have any excuses not to perform better than the youth striker, who was only given his senior debut against Tottenham Hotspur last month.

It's obvious Obi shouldn't be chucked into starting teams, although calls to remove Hojlund from the line-up will grow louder if the youngster continues to outshine him during his cameos.

It is easier to impact a game from the bench and it's a different kettle of fish to start, of course. The adrenaline was rushing through Obi's veins when he made his Old Trafford debut and he entered the pitch when legs were weary, but his performance gave Hojlund some food for thought.

For the second weekend in a row, Obi made more of an impact from the bench than Hojlund had managed by starting and perhaps the situation with the 22-year-old is worse than feared.

Hojlund last scored against Viktoria Plzen on December 12, meaning he hasn't found the net for 18 games. His confidence is shattered and he desperately needs to end his goal drought.

Fulham started Sunday's game poorly and it felt like Hojlund might finally end his barren run. He made a handful of decent runs in the first half and had a half chance, but he gradually faded as the game progressed and it wasn't a surprise to see him brought off for Obi in the 68th minute.

Despite there being truth in the argument that Hojlund hasn't received enough service this season, he is not doing not enough to get himself into regular goalscoring opportunities.

Hojlund works hard and looks knackered when he comes off, but he doesn't hold the ball up well and his link-up play is poor. His positional sense and knowing when to make a run into the box isn't a strength and the weight of not scoring has grown heavier on his shoulders each week.

This season has been a stark regression for Hojlund and he bluntly snapped "no" when he was asked if he would chat to Manchester based journalists in the Goodison Park mixed zone.

Hojlund will be aware of what has been written about him, but there is no smoke without fire: there would be little scrutiny of his performances if he was scoring more goals for United.

The Denmark international is not the only member of the dressing room to be enduring a really disappointing season, however, the team needs goals and the spotlight is on him.

There has been a strong belief that Hojlund will overcome this rough patch and come good. You don't turn into a bad footballer overnight and his haul of 16 goals in his first season at the club represented an excellent return, but some fans are beginning to lose hope and patience.

Hojlund must believe in himself to return to his best and work harder at Carrington to achieve that. You have to sympathise with a striker suffering a drought because it is a lonely place.

Nobody needs a goal more than Hojlund in the dressing room at this stage.
