Manchester City will make a late decision on Erling Haaland’s availability against Liverpool on Sunday.

The striker went off late in the win over Newcastle last weekend with what appeared to be a knee issue, although Pep Guardiola played down the severity of the issue after the match.

However, Haaland was an unused substitute in midweek as City crashed out of the Champions League after defeat to Real Madrid and he remains a doubt ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad Stadium.

Asked if Haaland will be fit to face the Reds, Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference on Friday: “I don't know yet. Tomorrow we will know.”

There was a more concerning update on the fitness of John Stones, who is facing another spell on the sidelines.

The 30-year-old has started only six Premier League matches this season and has suffered another setback, after he was forced off after just eight minutes at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Stones could now require surgery, as was the case for Manuel Akanji last week. Akanji is expected to miss up to ten weeks after undergoing surgery on a thigh injury.

"He's injured, a difficult one,” Guardiola said of Stones. “Next hours, days we'll know if he needs surgery or not.”

On whether Stones will be out for a long period, Guardiola added: “Yeah, like Manu Akanji.”
