Former Carlisle United loan star James Chester has announced his retirement.
The 36-year-old, who is now with Salford City, confirmed his decision on Thursday.
Chester, who impressed on loan at Carlisle from Manchester United in the 2010/11 season, said it was the right time to call it a day.
He announced his decision on Instagram, where he wrote: "After 18 years as a professional footballer and over 500 games, the time has come for me to announce my retirement.
"It’s been an incredible journey, filled with unforgettable moments, amazing teammates, fantastic staff and unwavering support at every club I’ve played for.
"I’m incredibly proud of everything I’ve achieved in the game, and now I’m excited to see what my life brings next.

"I’ll remain part of the Salford City squad until the end of the season, where I’ll continue learning about the other aspects of football. Thank you all for everything.”
Chester has made just two appearances for Salford this season, and no league outings, after joining them from Barrow last summer.
His time at Carlisle saw Chester shine under Greg Abbott, the defender making 24 appearances in the first half of the 2010/11 League One season.
He also contributed four goals in what was his third loan move away from Old Trafford, Chester having previously had spells with Peterborough United and Plymouth Argyle.
Among his highlights at Carlisle was the winning goal in a memorable 3-2 win over Southampton at Brunton Park.
Chester left Carlisle that January and went on to join Hull City permanently. His time at Hull included a run to the FA Cup final in 2014, the defender scoring against Arsenal in the Tigers' 3-2 defeat at Wembley.
He also played for West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Stoke City and Derby County before spending last season in south Cumbria with Barrow.
Along the way he won 35 Wales caps and was in the side that reached the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2016.
