The new-look Champions League heads into the final round of group-stage fixtures on Wednesday with everything still to play for. Here we look at what each of the British teams need to do to reach the next round...
Manchester City
Pep Guardiola always expected Manchester City’s attempt to avoid Champions League “relegation” to go to the final game – and they need a win against Club Brugge to stay in the competition.
Defeat at Paris St-Germain, despite going 2-0 up through Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland, means they dropped to 25th place in the table, which would see them eliminated if they finished there.
The good news for Guardiola’s team is that victory against Brugge on Wednesday will take them to 11 points and will almost certainly be enough to secure them a play-off spot – as they will leapfrog the Belgians – to reach the knockout stages of this season’s competition.
Data company Opta Analysts ran a simulation of the new “Swiss Model” format and in 99 per cent of tests 10 points is enough to secure a play-off place, which sees the teams finishing between ninth and 24th battling to reach the next round. Other results this week mean a draw against Brugge will now not be enough for City to progress.
Liverpool
Uefa changed the format of the competition this season with teams playing eight games in the group stage and getting ranked between one and 36. The top eight go straight through to the last 16, with Liverpool already securing their place after defeating Lille in their penultimate match ot the league stage of the tournament.
Arsenal
Arsenal are virtually assured of a top-eight place after their win over Dinamo Zagreb last week.
Aston Villa
Villa are guaranteed a play-off place and should seal a top-eight slot if they beat Celtic at Villa Park.
Celtic
The Scots assured themselves of a play-off spot after beating Young Boys 1-0. Who would have thought they would be seven places above City?

The play-off draw will be held on January 31 in Nyon. The teams finishing ninth to 16th will be seeded, and will be drawn against the unseeded teams finishing 17th to 24th. For instance, ninth and 10th will be drawn to play either 23rd or 24th.
Teams can be drawn against another from the same country or an opponent they faced during the league phase.
