Shorthouse the hero as 1874 reach Cheshire Senior Cup quarter-finals - chof 360 news

1874 Northwich bounced back from Saturday’s home thrashing by progressing to the quarter-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

They did so with a 4-3 success on penalties after the 90 minutes of the second-round contest against the North West Counties League Premier Division side ended at 2-2.

Liam Fitzpatrick’s equaliser eight minutes from time brought about a penalty shootout in which 1874 goalkeeper Mike Shorthouse was the hero.

His two penalty saves gave John McGrath the opportunity to hit the winner with the last effort of the shootout, preventing the sudden-death stage.

Lucas Weir, who had put 1874 ahead in the fourth minute, Jack McKean, and Eden Bailey also netted their penalties, while Tom Morris fired his shot over the crossbar.

1874 will travel to Runcorn Linnets in the last eight but will return to Midland Premier League action at home to AFC Wulfrunians on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
