Ange Postecoglou favours versatile players capable of playing in various positions and Tottenham's deadline-day signing Mathys Tel fits the bill for the head coach.

Tel has been used from the left wing for Bayern Munich on his handful of appearances this season but he can also play on the right, and he has said his best position is "between a No.9 and a left-winger".

Given Spurs' record of injuries, Tel may end up playing where he is most needed but Postecoglou's winter selection crisis appears to be easing, with wingers Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert all due back in training next week and striker Dominic Solanke about another week or 10 days behind.

Tel is understood to have been won round to Spurs' project because Postecoglou said he would have opportunities in the second half of the season so, making the bold assumption that Spurs have a fully fit squad soon, where is the 19-year-old France forward likely to fit in?

Left-wing

Heung-min Son may be having a middling season by his high standards but the Korean remains Spurs' captain and an experienced player in an otherwise raw squad.

When fit, Son is still one of the first names on Postecoglou's team-sheet but he has looked jaded this winter, and Tel offers a potentially high-quality rotation option from the bench or when the 32-year-old needs a rest. Son could even switch to the right flank to accommodate his new team-mate, although he is happier on the left.

Possible Spurs XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Sarr, Kulusevski; Johnson, Solanke, Tel.

Centre-forward

Solanke is still a few weeks away from fitness, so Tel is likely to get opportunities at centre-forward in the immediate future.

Richarlison has made an impact since returning to fitness but has not completed 90 minutes this season and needs to be carefully managed given his history of injuries. If Tel makes a case to play through the middle, Richarlison could return to challenge for minutes from the left once Solanke is fit again.

Tel has naturally struggled for minutes up front for Bayern since the signing of Harry Kane and will hope to prove that he can hold his own as a centre-forward at Spurs.

Possible Spurs XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Bergvall, Maddison; Kulusevski, Tel, Son.

Right wing

Spurs have been short of cover from the right wing since Wilson Odobert suffered a hamstring injury back in the autumn.

Postecoglou prefers to use Dejan Kulusevski in midfield, while Mikey Moore, Richarlison and Timo Werner all look more comfortable from the left.

Tel's best chances of significant minutes may therefore come as competition for Johnson and the returning Odobert down the right, where he would be expected to match the Welshman's habit of arriving at the back post to finish chances.

Possible Spurs XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Gray, Kulusevski; Tel, Solanke, Son.
