Ipswich have agreed a deal to sign England Under-18 full-back Somto Boniface from Chelsea.

Boniface has been at Cobham since the age of nine and was part of the U18s side that won the Premier League South section last term.

The 18-year-old’s most recent England age-group cap came in May last year and he was part of the U17 team that reached the European Championship quarter-final 12 months earlier.

However, he has made only one appearance for Chelsea’s U21s so far this season, against Everton back in August, and is now headed to Portman Road in a deadline day move.

The two clubs reached an agreement last week, with the deal set to go through on Monday on completion of a medical and the necessary paperwork.

It is understood that Boniface is being viewed as a development signing and will initially join the club’s U23s, rather than Kieran McKenna’s first team.
