Ruben Amorim insists Manchester United can win the Europa League after they secured an automatic route to the last 16 with a strong finish to the group phase.

After a stuttering start, United won five games in a row to finish the league phase in third and secure a last 16 tie with either Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland.

Their 2-0 win against FCSB in Bucharest eased them into the latter stages and made sure they avoided a two-legged play-off in February. The Europa League is likely to be a key target for United now and winning the competition would secure them qualification for the Champions League next season.

United's form has been patchy under Amorim but the 40-year-old insists they have the quality to go and win the competition now, with their performances starting to improve as well.

"I don’t see a big difference in the way we play, but today we had more time to think and now you can see some movements, the idea is there because we have more time to play and understand the game," he said.

"I think we can go game by game and we can win it. Then you have the responsibility, no matter the context, you are in Manchester United so you must fight for winning trophies. So we will see.

"When you get to this stage of any competition, anything is possible and they can prove, on a good day, they can win against anybody. So we can think about that [winning the competition]."

United's chances will also be boosted by the two free midweeks they will now get in February and Amorim believes those extra days at Carrington will be absolutely crucial.

"That is really, really important for us, to have time to train, to create connection between everybody, even the staff, everybody there in training, go to the pitch, know each other in the right environment I think is really important," he said.

"Then you can have one week to prepare a game, so in the beginning of the week you can work your idea and then you have time to also focus on the opponent and prepare the game in a better way. The players can rest, I can understand better my players."
