Manchester United loanee Ethan Williams scored his first professional goal at the weekend.

Williams was sent on loan to Cheltenham Town in the mid-season window and he recorded his first goal for the club against Newport County, scoring from 30 yards with an outstanding lob.

Newport's goalkeeper attempted to clear a ball outside of his box and was caught off his line when Williams won possession. The youngster capitalised on the opportunity with a brilliant lobbed finish.

Williams scored and recorded an assist in a 3-0 victory for Cheltenham, which moved his side up to 11th in League Two. He notched his first assist for Cheltenham just a week before facing Newport and the 19-year-old is enjoying his first taste of senior football away from United.

"I'm really happy to score and help the team get three points. I've been working hard to try and impress the gaffer, to try help him give me the opportunity, and thankfully he has," Williams told Cheltenham club media.

"We can hopefully push for the play-offs. I had no idea how I put it on a plate for him [the assist], I just tried to put it in an area, but I was chuffed we scored because we were under the cosh.

"The goal was top, I ran straight to the fans. A top moment for me and my family watching, so I'm really happy with it. I just took a quick glance and saw the goalkeeper off his line."

Cheltenham manager Michael Flynn praised Williams, saying: "His goal was a superb finish and I was glad it fell to him more than anybody because he's both-footed, so whichever foot it fell to, I knew he'd have a good strike on target.

"If he carries on the way he is, he'd probably make an impact in Manchester United's first team at the minute. I'm delighted they trusted us with him and we'll do our best to help him for the parent club because he's a great lad, he wants to learn and we're pleased to have him."

Williams' professional contract with United commenced last summer and he was given the chance to train with FC-Lausanne's first team in October as part of an innovative agreement between the Swiss club and United.

The winger contributed an impressive 17 goals and nine assists in academy fixtures last season and played a crucial role in a supremely talented Under-18 side that claimed a treble.

Williams joined United's academy from Rochdale at Under-14 level. He is the nephew of Alex Williams, who rose to prominence in the early 1980s as one of the first black goalkeepers in the modern top flight, making over 100 appearances for Manchester City in a trailblazing career.
