Everton have appeared to make their feelings clear on the decision to overturn the awarding of an injury-time penalty in the Premier League clash against Manchester United.

David Moyes’ side seemed to be in control of the match, leading 2-0 until the 72nd minute. Bruno Fernandes started the United comeback with a free-kick.

It was a comeback that was completed just eight minutes later by Manuel Ugarte. It set up a final 10 minutes with both teams pushing for that elusive winner.

Deep into stoppage time, Everton thought that they had been awarded a penalty when Ashley Young went down in the box. Referee Andy Madely pointed to the spot to award the penalty, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) recommended that he take another look at the incident on the pitchside monitor.

After watching several replays, the referee took the decision to overturn the awarding of the penalty, much to United’s relief. It’s a call that has left Everton angry, with some replays showing a small pull on Young’s shirt before he goes down.

Taking to social media, giving updates on the game, Everton’s inclusion of ‘remarkably’ in their reporting of the incident makes their feelings clear.

On X (formerly Twitter), they wrote: “94’ VAR tell referee Andrew Madley to go to the screen and he opts to, remarkably, overturn his decision.”

It was a stance that was repeated by Moyes in his post-match press conference. “I can’t understand why the referee onfield makes the decision, if it was clear and obvious he should go to the screen, I didn’t see that, he pulls his jersey,” the Everton boss said.

“I thought the referee made the correct decision at the time and he should stick with it.”
