Wales vs Iran, World Cup 2022 live: Score and latest updates

Welcome to Day Six of the World Cup in Qatar and Wales We are focused this morning as they prepare to face Iran.

Both sides go into this match desperate for a positive result if they are to have any ambitions to make it past the group stages and with the remaining Group B finalists – England and USA – facing off later, this is their chance to make a statement.

While many Wales fans will be disappointed that their team couldn’t go on to beat the USA in their opening game on Monday, the 1-1 result was likely a fair result.

Rob Page’s side struggled to establish themselves in the first half, scoring behind Timothy Weah with talisman Gareth Bale looking somewhat out of reach.

But the hour comes the man comes. Despite a disappointing overall performance, Bale stepped up and scored an important penalty in the second half which rewarded the Welsh’s good work after the break.

While not perfect, the draw was by no means disastrous for the men in red and they now have a chance of setting up a grandstand match with England next Tuesday if they come away from this match by three points.

At the other end of the spectrum, Iran suffered a disastrous day in office on Monday. Losing to England was expected but the 6-2 defeat was not.

Described as a well-trained defensive side with a limited but at least extant attacking advantage, Iran proved very porous and were completely exposed to England’s fine performances.

Carlos Queiroz will be looking to get his side back to the form that saw them defeat Uruguay in a pre-tournament friendly in September.

Forward Mehdi Tarimi has been described as the big attacking threat for Iran coming into this tournament, so his brace against England was at least evidence that he is in a goalscoring mood.

The question then is whether Iran can do the business defensively to make sure his efforts really matter.

Full team news is expected from 9 a.m.
