Iran national team news: Azmoun is back

Carlos Queiroz changed five of the squad that lost 6-2 to England on Monday. Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who suffered a concussion in that match and was briefly allowed to continue despite not knowing his name, date of birth, nationality or even the last three digits on the back of the card, was substituted in goal by Hossein Hosseini.

other changes? Ramin Rezaian, Ali Gholizadeh, Saeed Ezzatullah and Sardar Azmoun replace Ali Reza Jahanbakhsh, Ali Karimi, Roozbeh Chasmi and Milad Moharami.

This must mean a change of system, from a 5-4-1 to what traditionalists would call a back four. Azmoun, who has scored 41 goals in 66 matches for his country, joins Mehdi Taremi (32 goals in 62) in attack.

Iran (possible 4-4-2) h Hosseini. Rezaian A, Bouraliganji M, Hosseini M, Mohammadi; Golizadeh, Izzatullah, Nurullah, Hajisafi; Azmoun, Tarmy.

Wales team news: Moore starts and Allen off the bench

Rob Page has made one very visible change from the team that started against the United States on Monday: Kiefer Moore replaces Dan James up front.

Joe Allen, who has not played since mid-September due to a hamstring injury, is on the bench.

Preamble

Who could imagine another emotional roller coaster ride? I’m afraid, if you’re Welsh or Iranian, you don’t have much choice. For different reasons and in different ways, both countries implemented the gradient series on Monday. It wouldn’t be any different today.

Let’s start with football. Iran realistically needs at least a draw to have any chance of reaching the last 16; Wales could theoretically lose today and still pass. But even in the unpredictable Snakes and Ladders game that is the World Cup group stage, that should not be encouraged.

Their goal is simple – a first World Cup win since Terry Medwin’s goal that beat Hungary in a play-off on 17 June 1958, ideally with another moment from Gareth Bale’s script. Eligible mayo It’s about goal difference, but it would be presumptuous to think of that at this point. Iran is a better team than I expected, losing 6-2 to England.

But they also have other things on their minds. Even in this most political World Cup, Iran’s situation stands out. I’m not going to write here, not only because I’m unintentionally terrified of unintentionally saying the wrong thing and canceling out before I kick the ball. It’s a delicate situation that’s hard to fully understand if you haven’t been following it closely from the start.

Players chose not to sing the national anthem ahead of Monday’s England game, in the latest gesture of support for protesters over the sudden death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in September. There are fears of retaliation when the tournament ends, but there is also some confusion about whether local celebrations of that defeat on Monday were directed against the country, the team (for “insulting” the national anthem), or both.

We’ll get back to all of that when the players line up for the anthems. I have to get going and write some failed zingers for the renamed Football Daily email – please su’scribe! – But I’ll be back with the team news about an hour before kick-off.

Starting 10 a.m. GMT, 1 p.m. at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium.
