This custom beach racing bike has a hardtail frame and a $1,600 gravel handlebar

Jules de Cock built the ultimate bike for beach racing using a Canyon Exceed frame, rated axle and $1600 custom cockpit.

The 25-year-old races on the road at UCI Level 1.2 for the World Cycling Team and recently won the rally Grand Prix in Morocco.

But the Dutchman specializes in sand, where he represents the BEAT bike club.

European beach racing champion Ivar Slick’s victory in the 2022 Unbound 200-gravel race highlighted the discipline.

Beach races are mainly held in the Netherlands and overlap with the cyclocross racing season.

Speaking to BikeRadar, de Kock says, “You need an aerodynamic position for the high-speed portions of the race, while you also need to handle the bike well enough through the technical sand sections of the race.”

De Cock’s exotic and luxurious technical choices reflect these unique demands.

Custom Canyon exceeds beach rider specs

De Cock’s bike is built around a Canyon Exceed frame. The brand’s all-around XC hardtail weighs in at 835 grams of high-quality carbon.

He spray-painted the frame in BEAT Cycling colors and drilled the carbon fork to allow for internal cable routing.

The mountain bike tire has clearance for wide, tubeless tires to give traction in loose sand.

De Cock runs Schwalbe G-One Speed ​​tyres, which are 64mm wide when inflated on Classified Cycling’s 35mm wide inner tubes.

Beach racers rarely use a front derailleur, but they do need big gearing for high speeds.

Custom-designed deep-section wheels utilize Classified’s Powershift technology, a wireless shifting system that mounts inside the hub and is designed to replace the front derailleur.

“The ability to shift under load is an amazing addition to a beach bike,” explains De Kock, pointing to the Powershift system’s claimed ability to shift regardless of torque being applied through the drivetrain.

He adds, “Almost all beach racing bikes are equipped without a front derailleur, because these things perform worse when towed through a beach environment full of sand, water and salt.

However, you need a large gear range.

A seeded center is ideal for this.

“In a winter storm with the wind at your back, the racing speed exceeds 50 km/h, but you also have to drag yourself over the dunes at close to walking speed.”

On that note, de Cock uses Shimano SPD pedals because at slow speeds at pedal failure, beach racing requires the cyclocross skill of a running bike.

Speeco’s custom gravel cockpit is straight out of gravel racing. De Cock is Co-Founder and Product Engineer at the brand specializing in integrated aero handlebars.

Jan-Willem van Schip has been disqualified from the Tour of Baloise Belgium for using the Speeco Aero Breakaway Bar in 2021.

The brand says everything about the bar, from width to flare, can be customized for the rider.

It can catch the bars for long-distance gravel racing.

De Cock paired wide, flared drops to help control a sandy singletrack, with compact, narrow stretches to get the air on the open beach.

There is a built-in mount for the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, which attaches to an SRM power meter.

De Cock uses SRAM Force eTap AXS wireless shifting. He says the “harsh beach environment” will wear down the cables on the Shimano Di2 mechanical groupset and sockets.

The chunky single chainring is an aftermarket addition.

A SRAM Super Boost crank enables it to run a single 52T chainring from Garbaruk on the mountain bike frame.

De Cock sits on a Shimano Pro Stealth off-road saddle.

He says he tried an ISM time trial saddle for an added aerodynamic advantage, but “found out the way it hurts not to use it off-road.”

De Cock believes the full weight of the bike is around 10kg.
