Chelsea defender Thiago Silva made history on Thursday night when he became the first player in Brazilian history to lead the team in three different World Cups. Still playing at the highest level at the age of 38, Silva will hope he can help lead the team towards another title.
A favorite for the tournament, Selecao has brought some exciting talent up front with the likes of Neymar Jr., Vinicius Jr and Rafinha only three of the nine strikers called up. Despite the wealth of talent that could be drawn on, he may be the back line required for these types of knockout matches.
This means some reliance on Silva and his teammates, who claimed before the opening match against Serbia that he is enjoying the best version of himself: “I am enjoying the best version of Thiago Silva. At 38, I am going through one of the best stages of my career.

“Today I am definitely a much better person who is ready for this moment, very calm and very comfortable here, with the confidence of everyone. I have always been ready for all situations and I thank the coach for appointing me captain, it is a special moment.”
While plenty of players default to their club connections when on the international stage, this is not the case for Silva, who has taken his Chelsea loyalty with him to the World Cup. This was seen in an Instagram post, where the centre-back showed off his pads before the match.
The design had both blues and Brazil as well as references to both his children and wife, clearly showing his emotional connection to representing all things on the world stage.
