Goalkeeper Jackson Smith, left back Hugo Bueno and winger Kim Campbell have all been officially promoted to the first team, while Conor Ronan has also remained in the squad and greeted him in the fold.

Smith played in pre-season when José Sa and Mateja Sarkic sustained brief injuries at the same time, while Bueno has been selected to several Premier League teams and Campbell has been off the Premier League bench three times – most recently making his debut at Molino. .

All three players have played against Stockport and proven their quality and Lage is happy to see them advance to the first team.

“We are very happy with Jackson and his pre-season minutes, and Connor has made a good impression on me,” said Lage.

“I spoke to him because I thought he was a little anxious and realized he felt like this was our last chance because he’s been here for such a long time.

“But after talking to him, I can now see that he is relaxed, confident and training very well.

“At the moment, we know that with all these players they can bring competition to our team. It is very important to have these kind of players in our academy, to belong to our team and our team to achieve competition.

“With Bueno, I can see the way he is improving. From my first day here, he has started training with us and we can also see the good performance he has given in the U-21 team.

“And with Kim, at the start (last season) I looked at him for six months and thought ‘Maybe he’s just another baby’.

“But after that moment, I can see him as a man. He now has more responsibility, more training, and he has started this season very well. I am very happy and he can be a solution.”
