The results Wales now need to reach World Cup knockouts after Iran heartbreak

Wales’ hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stages took a hit as they suffered a late heartache against Iran.

After Wayne Hennessy was sent off, Rosbeh Çeşme and Ramin Rezaian scored in second-half injury time as Carlos Queiroz’s men secured a 2-0 victory at the Ahmed Ben Ali Stadium.

That means Wales simply need to beat group favorites England on Tuesday to have a chance of reaching the last 16.

Rob Page’s side have just one point to their name after two matches, and with the USA still facing off against England and Iran, Greg Berhalter’s side – along with Iran themselves – now have a realistic chance of finishing in the top two.

Wales’ hopes are hanging by a thread, even though they could qualify for the last 16. So it all plays out but Wales need something special against England when goal difference could prove decisive. England play USA at 7pm this evening.

If England beat USA

If England beat the USA tonight, that would see them through, with Iran on three points and Wales and the Americans on one point each heading into the final round of matches.

If Iran and the United States tie in the final matches, and Wales beat England, Rob Page’s side will go into the race as the second-placed team on goal difference thanks to Iran’s 6-2 opening round defeat to England.

If USA and Wales win their final match, they will each be on four points and again will be down to goal difference. If the goal difference between the two parties is the same, goals scored will be the next deciding factor.

If USA beat England…

This situation would see the USA enter the final round with four points, England and Iran with three points and Wales with one point. In this case, a Wales victory over England would tie them with either the United States or Iran, depending on the outcome of that match. England is sure to come out.

If the USA and England team tied

That would leave England on four points, Iran on three, the United States on two and Wales on one. Once again, a Wales victory in the final against England would level them on points with England, and possibly Iran.

Essentially, if England and Iran win again, the World Cup will be over for Wales.
