Private medical images were found more than ten years ago for use in the LAION-5B’s image collection, according to Lapine, an AI artist.
Using Have We Been Trained, a website that allows artists to check if their work has been used in the image collection, Lapin found this disturbing result. Two of her medical photos came up unexpectedly when Lapin did a reverse search of the photos on her face.
Labin wrote on Twitter, “In 2013, a doctor took a shot of my face as part of clinical documentation.” He passed away in 2018, and somehow that photo appeared online before it appeared in the dataset — the photo I signed on my doctor’s consent form, not a dataset .”
LAION-5B is supposed to use only images that are freely available on the web. These images were obtained from her doctor’s records and somehow made their way online before ending up in LAION’s photo collection. According to the LAION engineer since the database does not host the images, the simplest way to get rid of them is to “ask the hosting website to stop hosting them”.
