The assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks is on administrative suspension after he was arrested by Dallas Police on Saturday morning.
Darrell Armstrong, 56, was arrested as a suspect on an aggravated assault charge. He is not in jail according to Dallas police.
Dallas police responded to a call in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday.
Brittni McGriff told police that Armstrong struck her on the side of the face with a pistol, then loaded a full magazine into the pistol and threatened to shoot her. She then left the residence, according to an affidavit released by Dallas Police.
McGriff told police that Armstrong had been drinking and the couple was having a verbal argument before he became irate and struck her.
Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and treated McGriff at the scene.
Police determined that Armstrong and McGriff were in a relationship and living together.
The affidavit also included a statement from McGriff that claimed there had been multiple family violence-related incidents in the past, none of which were reported to the police because she did not want to cause Armstrong to lose his job.
Armstrong's attorney Larry Taylor released the following statement:
"We are in the preliminary stages of conducting our own independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding yesterday's incident involving my client Darrell Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong has been an upstanding member of the Dallas community during his playing days and as a coach. We will have more to say about this incident in the coming days."
The Mavericks said Taylor is on administrative suspension pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
Dallas police said there is an ongoing investigation into the incident.
