Portswood Road crash: Man arrested after BMW crashes into flats

A man has been arrested after his BMW crashed into flats in Portswood.

The white BMW 316 crashed into Newlands Island on Portswood Road.

Police said the road has been cordoned off between Brickfield Road and Kitchener Road and remains closed to ensure the structural stability of the building.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and criminal damage after police were called to the crash at 1.25am.

Neighbors described hearing commotion in the early hours and “a lot of noise”.

One resident said, “I heard a lot of noise very early this morning, it woke me up and I couldn’t go back to sleep. I’m sure it was a car accident, it sounds very serious.”

Another said, “I don’t know what happened, but I noticed the noise when I woke up this morning.”

“The police were coming and going, the traffic was chaotic and people couldn’t cross and had to come back.”
