Policeman arrests ‘drunkest driver he’s even seen’ after fatal crash

The court heard how, after striking Mrs. Hawes and her friend, Witt not only stopped, but continued along the A149 for another mile.

He stopped only after hitting a sign, trees and bushes at the edge of the road.

When officers arrived at the scene of the second crash, they found White, smelling of alcohol, sitting in the driver’s seat, with a half-drunk bottle of vodka in the car.

PC Callum Walchester, who tried to persuade Waite to provide a sample, said: “I’ve been a PC for 10 years and worked in the Highway Police for about six years, and he’s the most drunk person I’ve ever seen behind the wheel of a car.”

In the footage, he is seen mouthing his words and asking the police officers if they were insulting him.

After failing to give a breath sample, he was arrested and taken to James Paget Hospital in Gorleston.

While being taken into custody at Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre, around four hours after he drove Hawes and the teenage girl, he was recorded as having 120 micrograms of alcohol on his breath.

Officers estimated that this would have been about 158 micrograms if it had been picked up on the side of the road after a collision. The legal limit is 35 micrograms per 100 milliliters.
