Police warn people may need medical help as ‘potentially hazardous substances’ found on body in Shevington

Emergency services descended on Kilburn Drive, Chivington, on Thursday evening after reports a body had been found.

A police cordon remained in place on Friday, restricting access between junctions with Shevington Lane and Lyndon Avenue.

A forensics tent was set up on Kilburn Drive and several bags were seen on the road, while residents reported being unable to leave their homes.

After much speculation on social media, Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Friday morning that a body had been found.

A spokesperson said: “Around 7pm yesterday, officers were called to reports of a dead body on Kilburn Drive, Chivington.

Emergency services attended and sadly confirmed these reports.

A scene is currently on site and contained to Kilburn Drive without any disruption to the wider area.

The police are working to identify the body and investigations are ongoing. We are eager to speak to anyone who has any information about this incident.”

They then revealed concerns about the “substances” in the body and urged people who had been in contact with them to seek medical help.

The spokesperson continued: “Police believe there are potentially dangerous substances on the body and anyone who has had direct contact with the body should speak to officers or seek medical advice immediately.

“Officers are outside talking to residents and are very visible in the area.

“The scene is contained and it is believed that there is no greater danger to the surrounding area.

“We will keep the public informed when we have more information.”

The incident was a great shock to the people living nearby.

One resident said: “I didn’t hear anything, I fell asleep in front of the TV watching Coronation Street. I woke up because the police were knocking on my door asking if I had seen or heard anything. I told them I didn’t and they wouldn’t say what it was.”

“I saw police trucks and vehicles, but I thought it was an accident because it’s a blind turn on the road and people are always flying up and down it.”

Another said: “My husband had just come back from a jazz concert in Manchester and told me there was a police cordon in Kilburn. I had no idea but I was in Chivington this morning and there are all kinds of rumors going around.

“My daughter called this morning to say there was a tent near a clearing between the houses and they thought they had found a body.

“I heard sirens and saw blue lights last night but I thought they were just passing by on the main road.”

Another resident said, “I noticed the police around 11pm, and my daughter called to check on me and tell me to turn on the alarm.”

Anyone with information about what happened is being asked to contact the police online or by calling 101, citing incident 000910 on November 25.
