Nottingham Forest receive Cheikhou Kouyate injury update after midfielder stretchered off

Injury fears for Nottingham Forest midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate appear to have allayed.

The 32-year-old was bowled out at lengths in Senegal’s World Cup opener on Monday night and there was concern he would miss his country’s last two group-stage matches. However, manager Aliou Cisse gave an encouraging update.

He said in a press conference, which was reported by the official account of the Senegalese Football Federation on Twitter: “Abdou Diallo resumed training yesterday. He feels very comfortable. We hope that Cheikhou Kouyaté will also be ready.”

Kouyaté was in the starting line-up after the 2-0 defeat by the Netherlands. However, a second-half collision with Frenkie de Jong left him needing treatment on the pitch before he could be sent off.

After the Group A match, Cisse said the Reds’ summer signing had sprained his ankle. Sport News Africa later reported that he had torn his groin and was expected to miss the matches against Qatar and Ecuador.

Kouyaté was in fine form with Steve Cooper’s team before the championship break. Since moving to the City Ground as a free agent, he has made 13 appearances and found the net in a 3-2 defeat by Bournemouth in September.

Forest have a number of players they hope will be closer to a return when the season resumes next month. Moses Nyakati and Harry Toffolo are sidelined with hamstring problems, while Omar Richards is yet to feature for the club after suffering a hairline fracture in his tibia in the summer. Fullback Julian Bianconi was ruled out for the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Kouyat is one of 10 Forest players to compete in the World Cup. Wayne Hennessey, Neco Williams and Brennan Johnson represent Wales, Remo Freuler is with Switzerland, Ethan Horvath is part of the USA national team, Mohamed Drager is with Tunisia, Richie Larrea is with Canada, Brandon Aguilera is with Costa Rica and Hwang Ui-ju is with South Korea.
