PSG have had positive talks with Marcus Rashford’s representatives and the player’s stance on a transfer that would abandon Man Utd has emerged, according to reports.
The 24-year-old looked like a man on a mission in preseason. Rashford was among a group of attackers who shone in the friendlies and clearly followed the instructions of new manager Erik ten Hag.
Rashford looked like a rejuvenated figure and is hoping to bounce back from a subpar campaign last season. Indeed, the five goals he scored last year was the lowest single season in his career to date.Read:Carlsen resigns from chess rematch with Niemann after opening move – video | Sport
Rashford has a place in the Manchester United forward line if he can rediscover his form. In addition, the exits of Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata took several competitors out of the equation for minutes.
It is clear that the podium is set for Rashford to prove his worth at Old Trafford this season. As such, it comes as a surprise to see a slew of outlets reporting PSG poking around.
Indeed, Lot Solhekol. from Sky Sports claimed that no fewer than three separate publications allege PSG want to sign the attacker.
“We have heard from three different media outlets in France over the past few minutes that PSG is interested in Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford,” Solkehol said.
“This is a story first reported by” L’Equipe. They say PSG are looking for a new striker and Rashford has been a long-term target for them.”Read:7 records Liverpool broke or matched in 9-0 Bournemouth win – Liverpool FC
PSG boss Christophe Galtier recently confirmed that a versatile new attacker is on his agenda. Rashford fits that bill as he can play wide as well as central.
Rashford stance emerges
The original source of the information is the French outlet L’Equipe. ESPN journalist, Julien Laurenstweeted later L’Equipe’s report was correct.
In addition, Laurens tweeted that Rashford is “excited about a new challenge.” Skys Solhekol claimed he had heard something similar.
“A few other outlets say the player is open to making the switch,” Solhekol continued.
“There has been a lot of talk about the fact that he still has a one-year contract. But United have the option to extend that for another year.
“It’s basically another year, so United don’t have to sell him if they don’t want to.”
Rashford’s contract expires next summer, but United have an option for another 12 months.
His contract status is probably one reason why PSG see an opportunity, though talkSPORT claimed that no official contact has yet been made with Man Utd.Read:Holgate adds to Lampard’s injury concerns
Instead, talks have been held with Rashford’s entourage and… per GetFrenchFootballNews, they are said to ‘progress positively’.
Would Man Utd really make money?
United already seem to fall short in the final third and an exit from Rashford would only add to Ten Hag’s early woes.
The mail article noted PSG are fully aware of Rashford’s affinity for Man Utd. As such, they know signing him won’t be cheap.
That could mean a significant offer could be made – and could at least give Man Utd something to think about – if their interest is confirmed. But whether a sale so late in the window would be a smart move is another matter entirely.
Details of United’s possible stance if a bid were to be made, Skys Dharmesh Sheth said: “We are just waiting for confirmation of Manchester United’s stance on Marcus Rashford.
“They are under no pressure to sell with that option to extend his contract for another year.
“Given the problems they have now with the front line with injuries [Anthony Martial] and the saga surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo, I don’t know if Manchester United would be in a position to even consider losing another of their forwards, not least Marcus Rashford.”
