Manchester United will continue to support manager Eric Ten Hag in the transfer market after spending a club record £220m this summer.

United director of football John Murtaug has promised more money to Ten Hag after the arrivals of Anthony, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Terrell Malacia and Martin Dubravka.

However, Murtaug cautioned that United are unlikely to make many signings in a single transfer window in the future after going forward on schedule, and would aim to do most of their work in the summer rather than in January.

Manchester United’s director of football, John Murtaugh, has confirmed manager Erik ten Hag will be backed in the transfer market again next summer after spending £220m this year.

We’ve also seen more departures than usual, and this has been an equally important part of reviving the team after a disappointing 2021-22 season.

We will continue to support Eric in ensuring he has the right quality players and personalities to succeed, while ensuring that the investment remains consistent with our commitment to financial sustainability.

Overall, we are well ahead of schedule in our staffing plans as expected at the start of summer, and we don’t expect the same level of activity in future windows. As always, our planning focuses on the summer window.

Murtog believes Tin Hag had already justified the club’s decision to appoint him as manager, adding: “After a thorough research and due diligence process, it was clear to us that Eric was the strongest candidate, based on his outstanding coaching record, and commitment to the proactive, attacking football we want to play, The vision and ambition he showed for the role.

“There is still a long way to go, but we have already seen, in his first four months in office, an increase in unity, focus and leadership that bodes well for the future.”
