World number 23 Dustin Johnson thinks it’s only fair that LIV Tour players can earn official world ranking points

The official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) has confirmed that this season’s LIV Golf events will not offer world ranking points, despite the Saudi-backed circuit’s new partnership with the Middle East and North Africa Tour.

The Middle East and North Africa Tour – a golf tour of Dubai that has offered world ranking points since 2016 – announced on Wednesday a “strategic alliance” with LIV Golf that will see all of its events added to their schedule and all members of the Saudi-backed circuit join their tour.

LIV Golf believes the move could make their event eligible to receive official world ranking points, likely once the Thailand event begins on Friday, although OWGR said it had not been sufficiently informed of the development and that a decision would only be made after a review.

In a statement, OWGR said: “The Official Golf Ranking (OWGR) received a communication from the MENA Tour on October 5, 2022, at 13:05 GMT. The message detailed significant changes to the MENA Tour membership structure along with Along with an outline of the initial series of tournaments in the 2022/23 MENA Tour season.

“OWGR notes that the first two tournaments in the series looked the same as the LIV Golf Invitational Series tournaments in Bangkok and Jeddah. Communications from the MENA Tour included the starting field data file for the Bangkok tournament, confirming that it is an issue.

“Changes to the MENA Tour are currently being reviewed by OWGR. Note these changes introduced by the MENA Tour are not sufficient to allow OWGR to perform the usual necessary review prior to LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok (October 7-9) and LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah (14-16 October).

Only after the review is complete, a decision will be made on awarding new “Limited Field Tournaments” points for the MENA Tour, which the MENA Tour has defined in its regulations as “any approved MENA Tour tournament, which consists of a field A player under 80 players.

“The MENA Tour’s regular official events have conducted over 54 or 72 holes with a cut-off after 36 holes, and its Tour Championship, which typically runs over 54 holes without cut-off, remains eligible for inclusion in the OWGR.”
