Israelis and Palestinians braced for an escalation of violence after Israeli commandos killed nine Palestinians, including a 61-year-old woman, and wounded 20 in clashes with gunmen in Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military said special forces had been deployed to detain members of the Islamic Jihad group suspected of planning and carrying out “several major terror attacks”. The commandos shot and killed several suspects they believed were shooting at them.

Palestinian officials said Majda Abdelfattah Abid had been killed along with “eight martyrs”. Islamic Jihad confirmed the confrontation with Israeli forces during the incursion deep into the Jenin refugee camp. Hamas also claimed that its men participated.
