An American teenager has told how she only found out she was pregnant when she was already in labour.
Bri Blanton, 18, was rushed to hospital in September last year when she woke up in double pain.
When she arrived at the hospital, the teen was told her waters had broken and she was 5cm dilated – despite having no idea she was pregnant.
Ms Blanton – who had no obvious pregnancy symptoms and even had a negative pregnancy test months earlier – gave birth to baby girl Oakleigh just two hours later.
The nanny, who is from South Carolina in the US, said she was “completely shocked” when she found out she was having a baby.
She said: “I woke up early and thought I wet myself. I was doubled over in pain.
“When they told me I was pregnant and in labor, I was in complete shock.
“I kept saying to my mother: ‘This can’t be done.’
“They put her on me after she was born, and my mom said I looked like a deer in the headlights watching her.”
She added: “It took me four hours after she was born to calm down.
“I told my friends I had a baby and they said ‘but you weren’t pregnant last week’. They couldn’t believe it.”
The drama started when Ms Blanton woke up at 4:30 am on September 8, 2022 to find water all over her mattress. She thought she wet the bed.
But when she felt pain, she rushed to get her mother’s help.
“I was in a panic,” said her mother Jennifer Blackwell, 36. “I had no idea what was going on with my child.”
The couple went to Spartanburg Medical Center, Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA, and Ms. Blanton explained her symptoms to a nurse.
“The nurse asked if she could check Bri’s cervix,” Mrs. Blackwell said. “Then the nurse really looked at me wide-eyed and said, ‘She’s dilated and in labor.’
“I was worried about her because she was about to have a baby she wasn’t prepared for. We had nothing in the house for a baby.”
Oakleigh was born weighing 7 lbs 4 oz.
Ms Blackwell, branch manager of a care home, said: “For us it was like going to bed and waking up pregnant.
“But Oakleigh is a blessing. Watching Bri become a mother is truly beautiful.
Ms Blanton says she had no pregnancy symptoms and continued her active lifestyle – riding, fishing and hunting – without knowing she was pregnant.
“We bought her prom dress four months earlier and it fit like a glove,” said Ms Blackwell.
“It still fit perfectly on prom day, but she would have been five months pregnant.”
Ms Blackwell had a hunch that her daughter might be pregnant a few months earlier when she vomited after a heavy meal. She had her daughter take a pregnancy test, but it was negative.
“She was eight months pregnant in a bikini with no bump and even took a negative pregnancy test. We had no idea,” she said.
“She took the test in front of me. It said negative on it, so I was like, “phew.” We haven’t thought about it anymore.”
Oakleigh is now four months old and Mrs Blackwell is proud of the parent her daughter has become.
“She is hands down the best mom,” she said.
“Oakleigh has us all wrapped around her little finger.
“Her facial expressions are everything.
“She smiles and smiles all the time. She is a very happy girl.”
