Who’s playing

Army West Point @ Massachusetts

Current Records: Army West Point 4-6; Massachusetts 1-10

What to know

After three games on the road, the Massachusetts Minutemen return home. The Minutemen and the Army West Point Black Knights will face each other in an FBS Independents bout at Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Saturday at noon ET. The military should still ride high after a victory, while UMass will try to right the ship.

Last week’s game between UMass and the Texas A&M Aggies wasn’t a total blowout, but with UMass falling 20-3 on the road, it was damn close to becoming one. QB Brady Olson had a memorable game, but not in the way you want to be remembered: In addition to not producing a single touchdown, he fumbled the ball once with a completion percentage of just 40.91%.

Meanwhile, the Connecticut Huskies usually have all the answers, but last week the military proved too difficult a challenge. The Black Knights pulled off a comfortable 34-17 victory. They can attribute much of their success to RB Braheam Murphy, who rushed for one touchdown and 124 yards on seven carries. That nimble footwork stands out as the first time Murphy has reached the 100-yard rushing mark this season.

The Minutemen should know they’re going to be fighting an uphill battle given the 20 point spread they’re facing. Those playing the odds have seen things go back and forth with UMass being 4-5 to the spread.

UMass is now 1-10 while Army is at 4-6. A few defensive stats to keep in mind while watching: UMass ranks 15th in the country in the number of passes allowed per game, with only 185.1 averaged. But Army is even better: they enter the game averaging just 175 passing yards allowed per game, ranking 10th best in the nation. We’ll see if that advantage gives the Black Knights a path to victory.
