Fabian Schar’s ‘nasty’ vow as Kai Havertz is restrained during Newcastle United win over Chelsea

Fabian Schar insists it won’t just be pretty football when it comes to Newcastle United’s battle for a place in the Champions League.

The Swiss international has stated that United must be “bad” if they are to beat the likes of Chelsea into the top four this season. Their 1-0 win over the Blues put them nine points behind the team from Stamford Bridge.

In a match that ended with Kai Havertz having to be tied down after a confrontation with Dan Byrne, it was revealed that the Jordi defender’s battle with the German international sparked crazy scenes.

Shar said after the match: “It was unbelievable. When you see in the last 10 minutes how we left everything on the pitch, we desperately needed a win.

“Sometimes you have to be bad and put everything on the pitch. We did it brilliantly and overall I think we deserved to win.

“It was great to end the first part of the season like this.”

The match concluded with Jamal Lascelles also obtaining a reservation for Marc Cucurella as he prepared. Schar said Newcastle would spare no effort to win.

Shar said: “We just want to win, you know. We do our best to win.

“He put everyone on the line, every tackle counts and it was a real fight. We didn’t give Chelsea any chance to score, that’s how you win games against them.

“We wanted more so we’re really proud of the team.”

Schar knows that if Newcastle can replicate their first 15 form in the next 15 games, he will run into the competition as a Champions League contender and possibly a title contender.

Shar told Chronicle Live: “Where are we now and when you see the first 15 games, what we have achieved is excellent. We can be really happy with that.

“We know we are not halfway in the Premier League yet. It’s still a long season and we have to do the same when we come back.

“Obviously we are in a great position and we have to go back and try the same thing again.”

Tone’s centre-back will now meet Switzerland in the World Cup where he will face Bruno Guimarães, Brazil, Cameroon and Serbia. While he doesn’t want the domestic season to end, he knows the calls of duty.

Schar said: “Obviously we’ve got six wins in a row and are in a great position. I don’t want to stop the season with Newcastle but I think it’s the same for everyone.

“I’m going to the World Cup, which is also something special. So I feel for both of them.

“I don’t want to leave Newcastle but playing in the World Cup with Switzerland is special. I will enjoy it and then I will be happy when I come back.”
