How long have you thought about your team selection, do you already know your base?
If they’re good enough to show up, we deserve to give them a fair amount of time on the field, and that’s all I’ve tried to do when we get together. Some guys, through no fault of their own, can only play for 15, 20 minutes – if there’s someone like that, we can take care of it. But they get as many minutes as they think they should get and it’s just to be fair to everyone.

It’s always fun to get together, the chatter is always plentiful. The stories are the same, but for some reason you still have to laugh when they tell the same story you’ve heard so many times. Their success is based on camaraderie – it’s not an individual sport, it’s a team sport. Everyone who comes along has had some success at Liverpool Football Club and they love getting back together and playing.
Players come from all over the world – how special is it that they still feel that connection to the club, even though they left decades ago?
I think once you’ve been attached to a football club like Liverpool, it will always be close to your heart. A lot of the guys work elsewhere with other clubs, so if it’s an international break they’ll get a chance to come along too and just say, ‘Thank you for having us and thank you for your support.’ Some people may have left and never got the chance to leave on their terms or say goodbye the way they would have liked.
