England v USA live scores, starting 11 team news and latest World Cup updates

World Cup: US goalkeeper Matt Turner describes England as favourites

England will meet the United States in Group B of the World Cup on Friday in Qatar. The Three Lions won their opening game in style against Iran, securing a 6-2 victory as Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish all scored past Gareth Southgate.

Harry Kane is rid of his fear of injury and is fit to play after having an ankle scan this week, while Harry Maguire has also announced he is ready to start with an illness. So Southgate is expected to field an unchanged squad.

England will want to end an unwanted record and claim their first victory over the United States at the World Cup. USA famously defeated England in the 1950 World Cup, before a mistake by Rob Green led to a 1-1 draw in South Africa in 2010.

The match starts at 10pm local time (7pm BST) and will be shown on ITV. For those in the US, it’s 2pm EST / 11pm PT and airs on Fox and Telemundo.

World Cup 2022: England vs USA

When England started playing ball against Iran, they felt something different.

“Definitely a click,” said John Stones of the 6-2 win. “Or wanting to make things right. We just came out of a bad period.”

They can now look through the other side. England have scored more goals against Iran than they have scored in the entire Nations League campaign. However, the truth was that it was a step up from Gareth Southgate’s general style and not just the last eight months.

“I think people wouldn’t expect us to be like this after watching us for two years and the style of football we play,” the manager admitted. “We may have retreated to the base.”

The challenge now is to make it the norm, and to make it clear that it was not partly a product of the chaos in Iran; that England had declared their credentials.

World Cup 2022: England vs USA

As young English footballer Judd Bellingham returns to the field in Qatar on Friday, friends and neighbors in his hometown of Stourbridge in the West Midlands are feeling proud.

And no more than his former caretaker in elementary school, who used to fetch a player’s lost ball from the ceiling as a boy.

“It seems like an everyday occurrence,” says Mark Williams. The Independent. “You could tell at the time he was a good little footballer and he was destined to be.”

“It seemed like he did it more than any other kid. It became a joke. Every day the stairs were out. I kept them on standby for that reason.”

He adds, “He was a very good boy. He always asked you to put the ball down well.”

This made the midfielder only the second teenager – after Michael Owen – to score for the Three Lions in a World Cup.

Jude Bellingham’s hometown is proud of the lad who trained a lot on the lawn:

World Cup 2022: Who is Jesus Valenzuela in charge of England against America?

Jesus Valenzuela is the referee for the England vs USA World Cup match tonight.

The Venezuelan is in charge of his first World Cup match after being selected as one of 36 referees at the tournament in Qatar.

The 39-year-old is considered one of the best referees in South America – he has officiated matches in the Copa América, Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana and Copa América qualifiers.

He was a professional referee in Venezuela’s first division, officiating nine matches before the league was paused for the World Cup.

In those matches, however, Valenzuela showed red cards in seven of them, as well as a handful of yellow cards.

World Cup 2022: What time does England vs USA start today?

The opponents this time around are the USA, who themselves drew Wales – although Greg Berhalter’s side will upset the fact that they were so dominant in that game early on and failed to make their advantage count enough to get the three points.

The US knows that although defeat will make things difficult, they still have to face Iran in their final match – and appear to be the weakest point of the quartet, with four points potentially enough for qualification depending on results elsewhere.

Bukayo Saka’s impressive performance in the Three Lions’ opener certainly means he will keep his place, with injuries likely to only result in Gareth Southgate changing his line-up.

The Group B match will start at 7 pm on Friday, November 25 at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

Iran’s soccer players sang their national anthem ahead of facing Wales at the World Cup on Friday – after they refused to sing the national anthem in their opening match against England earlier this week.

Iran’s fans booed and mocked the national anthem, but unlike the England national team, the team’s players did not remain silent and sang the words of the national anthem.

While the players sang the national anthem before their match against Wales, television coverage of the match showed pictures of stunned Iranian fans in the crowd at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.

“Don’t Take Me Home” became an anthem for Wales in 2016, but the danger is that they will soon book their flights. The latest late drama felt like a fatal blow to their hopes of extending their stay in Qatar as two goals in the 98th and 101st minutes gave Iran a well deserved win but thanks to a combination of more marginal wins and some offside. Inspirational goalkeepers, they seemed ready to let go.

However, Wayne Hennessy’s day will not be remembered for stopping Sardar Azmoun and Saeed Ezzatullah, as crucial as it seemed at the time.

World Cup 2022: England vs USA

Harry Maguire will miss England at a great time for Manchester United, with the Glazer family announcing on Tuesday that they are ready to sell just hours after Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was terminated.

The captain says he found it easy to focus on national team matters despite there being “a lot of talk going around the club”, and interestingly uses his former team-mate as an example of dealing with attack.

“Of course as a footballer nobody likes to be criticized, but I think it’s an integral part of the game,” said Maguire, who is feeling fine after being substituted against Iran where he was feeling unwell.

“I’ve been playing with Cristiano Ronaldo for the past two years and he’s one of the greatest players ever to kick football and he’s being criticized day in and day out.

“So, if this is going to happen to him and the position I’m in, I think it’s an integral part of the game, especially the position I play for Manchester United and captain Manchester United.

“With Cristiano playing and me around him for the last two years, he’s the greatest player, for me, to ever kick a football and gets criticized daily so that’s going to happen to each and every one of us.

“So, it’s an integral part of the game. It’s something you have to go through with training, do your best and that’s what I always tell myself. Just go in and do your best and that’s only you can do.”

World Cup 2022: England vs USA

Harry Maguire says his self-belief never wavered amid poor performances and widespread criticism, although the England defender admits his lack of game time has left him feeling some anxiety about his place in the World Cup.

Last year, the 29-year-old recovered from an ankle injury to star in the race to the Euro 2020 final, earning himself a place in the Team of the Tournament.

But things have gotten worse since then, with a miserable season for all involved at Manchester United followed by a captain who has endured a difficult start to the current season.

Dropped after Erik ten Hag lost his first two games in charge of the team, the centre-back only made seven more appearances – a period which also saw him weakened by injury.

Those difficulties have led to questions about Maguire’s place in the World Cup squad and the defender admits there was a part of him, no matter how small, that was worried Gareth Southgate would not be selected.

“It’s obviously a huge privilege to be chosen for your country,” he said before winning his 50th swap in Friday’s World Cup group match against the United States.

“It is the pinnacle of anyone’s football career to play in the major tournaments for your country, the World Cup in particular. It is the biggest tournament in the world.

“Obviously you have a fear of (not) being in a team, but I had such faith in what I did over the 49 matches I played for England that I gained the confidence to be in the team and to be available for the team and selection.”
