The second weekend of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer beta is officially live, this final testing period brings PlayStation, Xbox and PC players together to battle across maps and modes from the first PlayStation-exclusive weekend, but also includes the add-on The new ground war.

Modern Warfare 2’s second beta weekend includes Team Deathmatch, Domination, Knockout, Prisoner Rescue, third person mode, and ground warfare. A third person mode was added late this weekend, so we’ll be discussing that along with our initial thoughts on the ground war.

3rd person mode returns

The third person mode, which previously appeared in the original Modern Warfare 2, returns as a separate playlist with mixed replay modes. The return of this replay mode gives players a different way to experience Call of Duty multiplayer, and it should be a welcome addition for those who prefer third-person shooter games.

Personally, I find moving to a third person perspective to feel a bit awkward in Modern Warfare 2. You don’t stay in third person all the time, as the perspective shifts and grows to first person when you shoot. This would look like a real third person pose if we had an over-the-shoulder perspective to shoot instead. Any player like me who easily gets motion sickness might want to be wary of that particular playlist, because the transition between zooming in and out can be too much. Motion sickness has definitely crept in here. Of course, I’m often somewhat sensitive to movement, so this probably won’t affect the majority of players.

Overall, this might be an interesting change for some players. It also provides a better look at character models, which will likely have cool launcher looks in the store after its launch. This means that players who are not sensitive to motion sickness will be able to better enjoy any expensive skins they buy.

A little taste of earth war

Standard Ground War for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be played across 32v32 matches, but currently, the only Ground War option for the beta is the game’s new Invasion mode. This mode includes a miniature 20v20 version of the land war maps of Sarif and Said Bay.

Sarrif Bay is described as a 32v32 map set in a large port, with plenty of opportunities to fight on land, sea and air. However, the invasion cuts off the combat zones over the water. You can see the docks, but there are no boats to take for a test drive. In Invasion, you basically fight in the streets and buildings of the port city.

The part of Said used in the invasion has a similar feel to Sarif Bay with a city area with a lot of verticality. Some of the rooftops are close and others have bridges to keep moving across the rooftops, but there’s a lot of action also happening on the streets with vehicular combat. Just like the Invasion on Sarrif Bay, this experience does not include boats or any water battle. There is very little water on the outskirts of the map, so players can technically go swimming, but so far, this appears to be a situation without boats or any real opportunities to fight on the water.

Conquest mode is a large scale death match played alongside the new advanced AI in Modern Warfare 2. Friendly AI teammates are marked on the mini-map as circles, human teammates are shown as triangles, and other players are marked as circles. The artificial intelligence of the enemy is marked in red on the mini-map.

In this mode, vehicles are available and each team will start with AI soldiers. Elimination of players earns team points, and the team with the most points will win the match once the time is up.

Players earn points for their team by doing the following:

  • Point one: eliminating the enemy of artificial intelligence
  • Two points: shoot down an enemy drone or a counter drone
  • 3 points: Shoot down a VTOL Jet, Support Helo, or Chopper Gunner
  • 5 points: Eliminate a human player, shoot down an enemy warship, or destroy a vehicle owned or occupied by the player

Over time, the match escalated. Additional combat elements like armored soldiers and dropping a kill line are added, so there’s a real sense of progression in the movement, ensuring matches don’t seem too long. I also appreciate that removing enemy lines or vehicles contributes to the result in Invasion, but overall, I feel like this mode puts a lot of emphasis on mechanized farming. Modern Warfare’s new “Advanced AI” moves and interacts a bit smarter than the NPCs of the past, which I’ve watched flock to take cover and look around in a slightly more conscious state, but they’re still remarkably bots in the real heat of the action. This would be a good mode for players who are just starting to dip their toes into the Call of Duty franchise, or as a less competitive mode for players just looking to level up their weapons in large-scale matches, without the pressure of target capture points found in the traditional Ground War Objective mode.

With that said, this is still a decent taste of what to expect with a ground war. The new equipment and movement mechanics of Modern Warfare 2 are better presented on large-scale maps. There are more opportunities to cover or hang from the edges, including firing a pistol while hanging. There are more kills and opportunities to use rocket launchers, and it has all the chaotic gameplay one would expect from Call of Duty’s Ground War. Hopefully, the standard Earth War mode will be added later in the weekend so players can head out for some boating adventures.

Here are all the changes in Modern Warfare 2 that Infinity Ward discussed after the first weekend. This includes now-implemented fixes for map exploits and improved visibility during battles, but other changes may not apply until launch. The visibility in gun battles is definitely an improvement compared to the weekend, as there is less effect of flicker and smoke obscuring the target player’s vision.

Currently, the second weekend of beta is only available to those using Xbox and PC who have pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, while it is open to all on PlayStation.

In the final days of the beta from September 24 to September 26, anyone will be able to participate, regardless of their platform or whether they have pre-ordered the game. However, Xbox Live Gold is needed to run the Modern Warfare 2 beta on Xbox, but PS Plus isn’t necessary for PlayStation users.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on October 28 across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S and PC.
