Wesley Fofana is reportedly ‘close to’ Chelsea after the Blues sent Leicester a third, improved offer for the defender.
Fofana has become one of Chelsea’s main targets this summer following Jules Kunde’s transfer to Barcelona. Chelsea hoped to bring the player from Sevilla, but Barca defeated them in his services.
Thomas Tuchel’s squad is still in dire need of one, if not two, centre-backs. As such, they are willing to spend a lot of money on Fofana.Read:Portsmouth 2 Plymouth Argyle 2 Recap: Dramatic clash ends in a draw
Chelsea’s first offer for the 21-year-old was £62million. But Leicester held out and pushed this back as it didn’t meet their asking price.
The offer forced Brendan Rodgers to publicly state that Fofana, along with James Maddison, is not going anywhere.
“These players are not for sale,” he said. “We have to take players out, but it’s not getting rid of everyone and certainly not our best assets.
“It’s something the club is very strong at. James and Wesley are training very well and working hard for our game on Sunday.”
However, his comments do not put Chelsea out and they soon came back with a better bid worth around £70m.
This was more in line with Leicester’s valuation and some expected the Foxes to accept it.
However, they did no such thing and again told Chelsea to come back with improved terms or walk away from the negotiations.Read:Frank Lampard press conference LIVE – transfer latest and injury news ahead of Nottingham Forest
Chelsea return with new offer for Wesley Fofana
However, Chelsea plans to sign Fofana and a French outlet Media foot claim they have made a third bid.
It has the potential to be worth an astonishing £84.5 million thanks to add-ons. This would make Fofana, a former Saint-Etienne player, the most expensive defender ever.
The record is currently held by Manchester United and English star Harry Maguire. He cost the Red Devils £80 million when he switched from Leicester in August 2019.
Looks like Chelsea’s latest offer for Fofana has worked. That is because Media foot indicate that the player’s move to West London is nearing completion.
Transfer to the final stages
Most of the work on the deal has apparently been done, with only the final details.
After an agreement between the two Premier League clubs, Chelsea only has to make personal agreements with Fofana.
This shouldn’t be a problem as the French U21 international thinks it’s a good idea to take the next step in his career at Chelsea. Plus, the Blues can offer him a hefty raise.Read:Liverpool wait for transfer decision on two players ahead of deadline day moves
This is certainly a promising update for Chelsea. It just needs to be ratified by other major sources, such as Fabrizio Romano or David Ornstein, before Chelsea fans can get properly and truly excited.
Fofana would be an excellent catch for the Blues to finish. He is still young but has the potential to become a top defender in the Prem.
£84.5 million is clearly a lot of money to spend on someone who has yet to win a trophy or play more than two full seasons in England.
However, Wesley Fofana is someone who has the tenacity and drive to ensure his stay at Chelsea is a success should the move go through.
In the meantime, Bayern Munich reportedly launched an investigation into a Chelsea star earlier this summer.
