Chelsea are entering the international break with much excitement surrounding the club following the appointment of Graham Potter.

Potter has only had one game under his belt so far – a 1-1 draw against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday – and he will now have to wait until October 1 for the next chance, against Crystal Palace. But the former Brighton boss now has a good chance of making his mark on the club, with two weeks on the training ground in Cobham.

He won’t be the only busy person at the club, with owner Todd Boehly taking steps regarding the appointment of a new sporting director. Petr Cech and Marina Granovskaia are gone and new expertise is needed at the Blues. Here mirror football brings you the latest Chelsea headlines.

Freund close to role

Chelsea are close to appointing Christoph Freund as their new sporting director.

Boehly cleared the decks when he took over from Roman Abramovich in May, and Cech, Granovskaia and Bruce Buck all left their behind-the-scenes roles. The American billionaire is now almost done with his choice to replace himself as sports director.

Freund currently works for Red Bull Salzburg, where he helped sign Erling Haaland from Molde in 2018, and where he found players such as Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Dayot Upamecano.

“Chelsea is a huge club in transition. I can’t say exactly what will happen in the coming weeks and months,” Freund recently told Sky Sports Austria. He now appears to have decided to join the Blues after impressing Boehly during recent talks.

Graham Potter is said to be on the cusp of giving Armando Broja a shot at the Chelsea squad after the attacker impressed in training.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner left Chelsea in the summer and while Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have arrived, Broja is still drawing Potter’s attention. The new Blues boss reportedly believes the 21-year-old Albanian international has what it takes to take charge of his high-pressure system.

Broja was loaned to Southampton last season and didn’t get much of a chance from Thomas Tuchel, but the arrival of Potter is good news for him.

Callum Hudson-Odoi believes he can still return to Chelsea and break through thanks to Todd Boehly’s different approach.

Hudson-Odoi is on loan to Bayer Leverkusen this season, but Boehly insisted the German club would not be given an option to buy the winger in the deal.

Hudson-Odoi told the Daily Mail: “It’s definitely different. When a club tries to get a player” [on loan], they always want that option to buy at the end of the season. Todd said, “Listen, we want you back here.”

“You are still on the radar to be wanted by the club. The way he is trying to set it up, there are a lot of young players that he is trying to buy in the coming years. It shows that he wants to integrate the players into the team and help them develop.”
