Bolton Wanderers to host Man United U21 in Papa Johns Trophy

Wanderers will welcome Manchester United Under-21s to UniBol in the Papa John’s Cup Round of 16.

The Whites reached this stage with a 3-2 win over Barrow in League Two on Tuesday night after goals from Dabo Afolayan, John Dadi Podvarsson and Elias Kachunga.

Prior to that, they finished top of Group Two after victories over Crewe Alexandra and Leeds United U21s.

Ian Evatt’s men are three games away from a possible trip to Wembley. However, they were knocked out in the last 16 last season following a 1-0 defeat at Hartlepool United, with Matt Daly notching the decisive goal six minutes from time.

It’s still a regional competition between the North and South divisions at this point, with the last 16 games scheduled for the week of Monday, December 12th. This means Wanderers now have six matches in total during the month of December.

The draw was made by former Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan and former England player Shaun Wright-Phillips live on Sky Sports News.

“Bolton got a nice home draw, so that’s okay,” Nolan joked. “And they have Man United, so I hope they’re happy with that.”

Wanderers have not faced United’s juniors in a competitive match, and have not faced the first team in over a decade.

Elsewhere in the Northern Division, Salford host Port Vale, Everton Under-21s or Mansfield travel to Lincoln, Burton host Accrington.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Section, Portsmouth host Stevenage and Chelsea Under-21s travel to Cheltenham, Bristol Rovers host MK Dons and Wimbledon travel to Plymouth.
