A 15-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after his leg was impaled on a fence in Queens, according to officials.
The FDNY said they received a call just after 3 p.m. Tuesday regarding the gruesome incident on Himrod Street in Ridgewood, between Tonsor Street and Metropolitan Avenue. EMS and first responders found that a spike from the top of the wrought iron fence had gone into the teen's leg.
The victim and his friends had been horsing around, officials said, and one of his friends pushed him, causing him to land on the fence.
At first, there were thought of using a torch to help free the boy from the fence, but there were concerns about the head the torch would create, the FDNY said at a later press conference. Instead, they opted for a battery-operated band saw to cut three of the vertical bars, before cutting the top horizontal piece.
First responders used bandages to wrap the fence to the teen's leg, and then onto the backboard, the FDNY said. Officials credited the boy with staying calm throughout the 10-minute process of getting him free, saying it made rescuers' jobs that much easier.
The patient was escorted to Bellevue Hospital, the FDNY said. He is expected to recover from his injury.
