Defender Lisandro Martinez has hit back at criticism from former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, saying he 'wouldn't survive' in Argentina.

Just like various other pundits, Scholes has been critical of the current crop of United players throughout the season, with the club currently sat 13th in the Premier League table.

The former midfielder has said United will need up to bring in up to seven new signings in this summer's transfer window, identifying the centre-back department as an area in need of reinforcements. Scholes believes United should be aiming to sign two centre-backs.

United are set to say farewell to Victor Lindelof at the end of this season when his contract expires, and Jonny Evans could also depart when his deal reaches its conclusion, meaning they will need replacing. Martinez could also miss the start of next season after recently suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury recently.

The Argentine, who joined United from Ajax in July 2022, has not had an awful lot of luck on the injury front over the past 18 months or so, missing several months worth of action through various problems. However, Scholes does not believe he is good enough to help United get back to the top of the Premier League table even when he is fit.

The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes said: "Even when he's fit he's not good enough to win the Premier League with."

Martinez has taken exception to Scholes' comments and has decided to hit back on social media, writing: "This jinx guy is really hurting.... You put him in Argentina, and he wouldn't survive."

Martinez was in his best vein of form for quite some time when he was forced off injured against Crystal Palace earlier this month. He had established himself as United's first-choice left-sided centre-back and was showing signs of getting back towards his best.
