Wrexham star Elliot Lee has been taken to hospital following a car crash.

The midfielder, son of Newcastle United legend Rob Lee, was driving home following his team's Vertu Trophy quarter final win over Bolton Wanderers at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night when he was involved in a two-car collision. Emergency services attended and both drivers were taken to hospital.

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, confirmed in a statement on their website that the 30-year-old suffered no major injuries. The driver of the other car is being treated for their injuries, the extent of which are unknown.

A club spokesperson said: "Emergency services were quickly on the scene and the club would like to thank them for their prompt response and action. The club will be making no further comment at this stage."

The incident happened just weeks after Lee's teammate James McClean was involved in a crash ahead of the League One side's crucial promotion clash against Birmingham City. The former Republic of Ireland international was driving to training in his Audi RS6 on the morning of Wednesday, 22 January when the incident occurred close to Wrexham Golf Club.

Eyewitnesses said the 35-year-old's vehicle appeared to be written off in the single-vehicle collision. McClean later underwent medical checks but was cleared to play in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham at the Racecourse the following night.

The Red Dragons booked their play in the semi-finals of the Vertu Trophy on Tuesday night thanks to a second half goal from midfielder Andy Cannon. Lee was among the starting line-up against Bolton as Wrexham put themselves one step closer to a potential Wembley final.

The former Luton player played 63 minutes of the match before being replaced by Ollie Rathbone. Phil Parkinson's side will face Peterborough United at home in the semi-finals later this month, while rivals Birmingham take on Bradford City.

Lee has been a key figure for Wrexham since joining the club in the summer of 2022, scoring 39 goals across 111 appearances. He was a regular feature in the team which gained back-to-back promotions from the National League and League One.

Lee has made 31 appearances for the North Wales outfit so far this season, scoring eight goals across all competitions. Wrexham are currently third in the League One table and chasing an astonishing third successive promotion.

The midfielder started his career with West Ham and also played for Barnsley, Luton, Oxford United and Charlton Athletic before joining Wrexham.
