National League One: Old Redcliffians 19 Taunton Titans 12
On a cold damp afternoon, this game was played out on a heavy pitch with both defences putting in major shifts in their own 22s, writes Hugh Duder.
Within the first 14 minutes, Taunton were held up twice before Reds opened up the score to lead 5-0.
One of two probing runs by winger Ozzie James on 27 minutes led to a lineout inside the hosts’ 22. A catch and three mauls followed, and Isaac Dalton went over, the extras added by Louie Sinclair. 5-7.
Three minutes later, Taunton were held up on the try line for a third time.
Into the second half and on 52 minutes Taunton, having been dominant in their forwards play, lost a scrum and Reds, playing with the slope, scored a well-worked converted try to regain the lead 12-7.
The last quarter of the game belonged to the visitors, spending the majority of that time gradually breaking down Reds’ defence, who could not get out of their own half.
A neat 3/4 move saw Taunton debutant Ozzie James go over in the corner to level the scores at 12-12 on 65 minutes. The conversion a rare miss.
Relentless ball carrying by the Taunton forwards and a determination not to be denied, with the hosts clearly tiring, and only two minutes remaining, Charlie Wright scored the winning try. Sinclair adding the extras.
Titans deservedly taking the game 19-12.
This hard-earned victory was achieved by the whole squad. Dan Martin was man of the match for his aerial ability and running with purpose at the opposition.
Upcoming this Saturday (February 15) at Veritas Park, Taunton play Luctonians – 3pm kick off. This will be preceded by the former players’ lunch.
