A SINGLE goal separated Selby Town and Wakefield in a close encounter on Saturday.

Shay Evans-Booth scored the only goal at Nostell Miners Welfare's ground, with the fixture being forced to move to accommodate York Acorn's Challenge Cup fixture with Hull FC at Featherstone Rovers' stadium.

Selby started strong with an early chance for Ellis Wade, with a great ball in from Dan Davison hit straight at the keeper.

The game was finely balanced with a big turnover of possession from both teams until 19 minutes in when Wakefield took the lead.

A quick ball in to the centre of the field with Wakefield striker Evans-Booth through on goal, he picked his spot well with Liam Wilson having no chance.

With half-an-hour played, Jack Bull received a yellow for what looked like a fair challenge, the resulting free kick is cleared away.

Wakefield were now coming on strong, with a great chance to extend their lead but Wilson pulled off a great point blank save and smothers the ball.

Another chance soon came for Wakefield with Ryan Gothard losing his footing on the difficult surface. Wakefield were then through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Wilson made himself big and blocked the ball, managing to smother it.

Both teams came back out in the second-half with intent, with the Robins having some success in their attacking half.

Liam Love was working well down the left flank with a great dual taking on two defenders before crossing the ball in to Davison on the edge of the 18-yard box, who set himself for a half-volley, only to be blocked and cleared away.

Despite some substitutions, Selby couldn’t get back into the game and with just minutes to go, a free-kick from Connor Charlton was saved by the goalkeeper which meant the game ended 1-0 to Wakefield.

Shot-stopper Liam Wilson came away with a well deserved Man of the match having made some fantastic saves throughout the game.

Town giving a gutsy performance today but just couldn’t find the target.
