Wanderers hope to have Ricardo Santos back in training next week – but the defender will not be involved against Crawley Town.

The towering defender had been playing through an injury and has been sidelined for the past few weeks.

Santos had an injection this week but needs some time for the issue to settle before he can get back on the grass.

Carlos Mendes Gomes also misses out with a knock picked up in training, while Kyle Dempsey is a long-term absentee.

“Ricardo has had an injection this week,” said Schumacher. “He has had an ongoing sort of pubic bone problem.

“He has had an injection over the last couple of days and the plan for him will obviously be to let that settle down for a while and then hopefully get him back on the grass at some stage next week. But he won't be available.

“Kyle Dempsey is another long-term one, and Carlos Mendes Gomes picked up a knock in training last week so he won't be available for this weekend. But apart from that, we are doing OK on the injury front.”

George Thomason will not be involved against Crawley as the skipper serves the first of a two-match suspension.

Thomason picked up his 10th booking of the campaign at Reading last weekend, although he is eligible to play against Wrexham in the Vertu Trophy quarter-final on Tuesday night.

“George is going to miss the next two league games unfortunately,” the head coach continued.

“We have got the Wrexham game in between, that will be OK. It won't upset his rhythm and his flow, but he picked up his 10th caution at the weekend at Reading so I am disappointed for him to be missing for two games.

“But it gives somebody else an opportunity when these things happen. The lads in midfield will hopefully try and take that chance.”

Jay Matete is back available after serving a three-match ban. The Sunderland loanee was punished retrospectively for an incident during the final stages against Charlton.

Schumacher has had a full week on the training pitch with his squad after taking charge for the first time last weekend.

“It has been really enjoyable,” he smiled. “I have been really welcomed by everybody at the club. I enjoyed the game at the weekend apart from the result.

“I thought the lads played well and showed positive signs. Then, we have had a real clear training week which has been brilliant – it is not too often that happens.

“When you can get some time on the grass with the players, it makes your messaging a bit easier so I have really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
