The January transfer window has come and gone with Liverpool operating in a similar manner to how they did in the summer.
Martin Zubimendi was the Reds primary target at the beginning of the 2024/25 season with Liverpool thinking they were set to land one of Europe's hottest prospects. However, the Spaniard opted to stay in the Basque Country with Real Sociedad.
It now appears the 26-year-old looks set to join Arsenal in the summer after having spoken to Mikel Arteta, who has convinced Zubimendi to move to the Emirates. It is a blow to Liverpool who viewed him as their long-term answer to the number six defensive midfield position under Slot, but after they didn't land him in the summer.

The only two signings Liverpool made in the summer were Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa. The former is still with Valencia on loan this season whilst Chiesa has featured sparsely. Last month, the Reds opted not to enter the transfer market to strengthen their squad ahead of its Premier League title push.
However, come the summer, the Reds should look for reinforcements, especially with the potential departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk. And with that in mind, here is your Liverpool.com transfer round-up...
Liverpool interested in Frenkie de Jong, Angelo Stiller
The Reds are reportedly interested in midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Angelo Stiller according to CaughtOffside. Liverpool reportedly still want a midfielder despite the strong performances of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
De Jong could be available from Barcelona given their financial restraints while Stiller has impressed this season for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. The former could be available for around $36m (£29m/€35m), while Stiller could be available for $40M (£31m/€38m)
Reds eye Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement
However, a player Liverpool does not want to lose but looks increasingly like it is full-back Alexander-Arnold. The Reds vice-captain looks set to sign for Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer.
And one name they could look to replace the 26-year-old with is Chelsea's Malo Gusto according to TEAMtalk. They report Gusto recently changed agents from Castagnino agency to Wasserman, an agency that tends to deal with big money transfers and huge moves.
Liverpool has previously been linked with Gusto who can play on both sides at full-back.
Liverpool.com says: "Signings like De Jong and Gusto would be interesting and certainly add quality to the Reds ranks. If they do win the Premier League this season, they will be operating from a position of strength and will likely be as exciting an option to potential signings as any club in Europe."
