Club Brugge manager Nicky Hayen has confirmed Joaquin Seys will miss their Champions League round of 16 first leg clash against Aston Villa through injury.

The right-back has featured in all 10 of Brugge’s Champions League matches this season, starting nine.

Making a total of 38 appearances across the campaign in all competitions, losing Seys comes as a big blow to Hayen.

“It is now up to another player to get in that position and do the work now in the Champions League,” Hayen said after confirming Seys’ injury.

The defender was replaced in the 78th minute of their 1-1 draw against Gent on Saturday.

Gent scored in the 92nd minute to deny Brugge what would have been an important win after they lost at home to Standard Liege before that.

Brugge host Villa having won one of their last four and three of their last 11 games in all competitions, with five draws and three defeats completing that period of results since the end of January.

Before losing to Liege two weeks ago, Brugge had won 13 of 15 home games - a run which included victories against Villa, Sporting and Atalanta, plus a goalless draw with Juventus.

Brugge beat Villa 1-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium back in November as Hans Vanaken scored a penalty after Tyrone Mings picked the ball up in the box unaware that Emi Martinez had taken a goal kick.
