The FA Cup returns this weekend as both Manchester United and Manchester City aim to reach the next round.

United will host Fulham in their fifth-round tie at Old Trafford on Sunday. Around 24 hours earlier, City will face Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle at the Etihad Stadium as they battle to reach the quarter-final.

Both United and City go into the weekend's action having claimed wins in the Premier League. Ruben Amorim's side won 3-2 against Ipswich Town, while Pep Guardiola and Co. claimed a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

The fifth round of the FA Cup will give United and City a break from top-flight action for a few days, While both clubs will hope to claim wins in 90 minutes, there is always the possibility that a match will end in a draw.

If that were to happen, rules this season state that there will no longer be any replays in the FA Cup. As a result, any matches in the fifth round that are all-square after 90 minutes will go to extra time and, if needed, a penalty shootout.

Another aspect of the weekend that will be important for United and City to know is that VAR will be in use in the fifth round. The FA confirmed that the video assistant referee technology will be implemented in every match in the last-16 of the competition, which will include United and City's home ties this weekend.

A new addition to English football will be the introduction of semi-automated offsides, while will be in place in United's clash against Fulham, City's match versus Plymouth and the other six fifth-round ties in the FA Cup. Referees will also announce VAR decisions inside the stadium to provide more information to supporters watching at Old Trafford and the Etihad, as well to those watching on TV.
