Some bookmakers paid out on Liverpool winning the Premier League after Sunday's 2-0 win at Manchester City, and those that did so had their decisions vindicated as the Reds moved even further clear at the top of the table this week.

As recently as last Saturday, Arsenal had the chance to slash Liverpool's lead at the top of the standings to just five points, but the Gunners' defeat by West Ham followed by their draw with Nottingham Forest, combined with back-to-back Liverpool wins, has left the gap between the two sides at 13 points.

It would take a catastrophic collapse now for Liverpool not to end up winning the league, and come May, for the first time in 35 years, a packed Anfield is set to see the Reds hoist a top-flight trophy.

It has been quite remarkable just how serene the Reds' journey to the brink of Premier League glory has been; there was a seismic change in the dug-out last year with Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp, and the Reds actually entered the campaign amid a lot of fan discontent at a lack of signings last summer.

Slot is on course to guide Liverpool to Premier League glory with the same group of players that fell short under Klopp during his final season at the club, and that is something that has been so impressive to Premier League great Alan Shearer.

Speaking about Liverpool's impending ascension to title winner, Shearer told Betfair: "What's impressed me the most about Liverpool this season is that, besides Federico Chiesa, they didn't sign anyone, which is really unusual. Other than Liverpool fans, and maybe Arne Slot, I'm not sure even he would have thought they could do as well as they have. They've just been strong in every position.

"It was largely thought that they needed a midfielder and they went for Martin Zubimendi, before the season, but they couldn't get him. They've stuck with what they had, with Chiesa hardly having played at all. That is what's impressed me, having gone again with basically the same team. They look stronger than anyone else in midfield, and similarly in forward positions because they've got so many options.

"Certainly in defence as well, they have given one or two chances away, but in the main Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk have been absolutely superb. Wherever you look, all over the pitch, they've been dominant and you can't say anything other than that they've been the best team by an absolute mile."

Liverpool fans will expect to see the club sign some players this summer — Manchester City has shown this season what can happen when a team rests on its laurels — but for now all the praise must go to Slot and his players for adapting to major changes in the most impressive way possible.
