Patrick Dorgu was sent off in Manchester United's game with Ipswich Town on Wednesday night following an intervention from VAR.

Dorgu was sent off in the first half following a lengthy VAR check for a poor tackle on Omari Hutchinson. But despite being down 10 men, United still managed to claim all three points at Old Trafford.

Sam Morsy’s own goal and a Matthijs de Ligt effort put United ahead, only for the Dane’s poor challenge on Hutchinson to earn a red card after referee Darren England reviewed the pitchside monitor on the VAR’s advice. Ipswich drew level through Jaden Philogene before Harry Maguire scored the game’s winning goal.

And United supporters, commenting in the comments section of the Manchester Evening News website, have been having their say on Dorgu’s red card. Spiritoflakotasioux said: “We had glimpses of Amorim's dream on the left hand side with Dorgu and Garnacho until the sending off. Working with Ugarte and Bruno and Zirkzee, the one-touch play was beautiful to watch.

"Cannot blame Dorgu for the Onana disaster. He has to command his area and bark at Dorgu to leave that ball for him. Onana was an ornament for the second goal. He deserved 1/10. I would have given Dorgu 7/10. This kid is on the same page as Ruben, still coming to terms with the PL.”

Spoutingtwaddle wrote: “The red card was a red card, however the soaking wet ball and pitch contributed. You can see him slip and get the ball, unfortunately his foot skids off it because of the speed and the conditions. After his early mistake, which was 70/30 Onana's fault, I thought he was superb and was a constant threat.”

RedSurf remarked: “Dorgu had 2 bad moments. The SNAFU with Onana, and the reckless challenge. BUT he plays really hard and has speed and determination. Dorgu and Garnacho were a threat going forward. I just don't understand why Amorim kept Hojlund on the pitch. He cannot hold up the ball. Rarely wins an aerial challenge.”

Theoptomist wrote: “United worked really hard for the result. Onana at fault for both goals, we have to replace him in the summer. I think Dorgu will be a really good signing, his crosses remind me of Gary Neville and he has a great motor.”

Les Johnson said: “There was no malicious purpose at all [in the Dorgu tackle] and he slipped over the ball. Yes it was a red, but he was excellent in the first half and the stupid goal was Onana's fault, he should have stayed on the line! Tough, gritty performance, nothing classy, just true grit.”

Red Hector wrote: “Dorgu was our best player up to his sending off (which was deserved). The first goal was down to Onana. What was he doing coming all the way out?”
