Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim launched a passionate defence of Patrick Dorgu after he was sent-off in Wednesday night's 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.

The former Lecce wing-back was dismissed shortly before half-time after being guilty of committing a poor challenge on Ipswich winger Omari Hutchinson. Referee Darren England was advised to review the incident by VAR Craig Pawson and he brandished a straight red card.

It marked just his second red card of his senior career and it compounded a frustrating opening 43 minutes for the Dane, who had earlier been involved in a defensive mix up with Andre Onana that opened the door for Jaden Philogene to give Ipswich a 1-0 lead.

However, in between those two incidents, Dorgu was a regular threat down United's left flank, often making good forward runs, just as he had done in the weekend's 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

But as a result of his rash challenge on Hutchinson, questions were needlessly asked about whether or not he is ready to play in the Premier League. Post-match, Amorim hit back at those raising those concerns about the mid-season recruit, rightly highlighting that any player is capable of making an error.

"Any player here can have a mistake like today from Patrick and the sending off, he wants to play the ball," Amorim told TNT Sports.

"Maybe he's a little bit harsh with the way he went for the ball. He's inexperienced but he's clearly ready for the Premier League.

"People judge right away so last week he was okay, good performance against Everton and today they will say that he's not experienced enough to play in the Premier League. But I don't feel that way."
