Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim credited assistant Carlos Fernandes and first-team coach Andreas Georgson for the 3-2 win over Ipswich Town.

All three of United's goals came from set pieces taken by Bruno Fernandes, who claimed two direct assists for Sam Morsy's own goal and Harry Maguire's winner. Matthijs de Ligt put United ahead in the first half following a goalmouth scramble from a corner.

Carlos Fernandes has assumed responsibility of United's defensive and attacking dead-ball kicks after Georgson was hired by the club as a set-piece coach in the summer.

United sieved more set piece goals than any other Premier League side in 2024 and Amorim described the approach to dead-ball kicks in England as "completely different" from other leagues.

"We talk about that many times here when we are suffering goals," Amorim explained. "And you talk about Carlos changing with Andreas. We are in the same team and today they win the game for us. So the credit for them.

"It (set pieces) was the one thing that I feel here is completely difficult to playing abroad. The contact with the defenders, especially with the goalkeepers, so we adapt.

"I think we are improving the way we defend and also the way we attack set pieces. And, like today, it changed the game."

United have conceded first in 21 of their 41 fixtures this season but they came from behind to beat a bottom three side for the third time since the turn of the year.

Fernandes started the 2-2 draw at Everton as one of the two No.10s in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system but dropped back to central midfield and produced a man of the match performance against Ipswich.

United coped well with ten men in the second half after Patrick Dorgu was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Omari Hutchinson on 43 minutes. Amorim admitted it is a wrench United appear to be more comfortable in a more reticent set-up.

"We have to improve in every aspect," Amorim reiterated. "We lack some characteristics in our squad to play in a different way, we need to have more possession and I felt that today we were calmer with the ball, especially in the beginning and especially after we suffered the first goal.

"Bruno was important on that. Sometimes we want Bruno higher up the pitch to be nearer the goal but sometimes we need Bruno building up and he was really good on that today because he’s really confident with the ball no matter the context.

"We clearly need to create more chances and especially we need to score more goals. That is a big issue in our team. In the future we need to address that."

Amorim defended Dorgu after his home league debut was marred by a fourth-minute error that gifted Jaden Philogene a tap-in and ended with a red card. "The first situation: when he’s looking at the ball, he looks at Andre (Onana) and then looks at the ball. And when he looks at the ball, Andre jumps for the ball. Was a misunderstanding the way they connect each other.

"And the sending off, I know Dorgu quite well, he doesn’t want to harm anybody. And then you have this situation and you feel in the game, he was making a lot of runs, being aggressive and sometimes you overdo it."
