Darwin Nunez took to social media to respond to criticism of his missed opportunity during Liverpool's draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday.

With the scores level at 2-2, Nunez had the chance to hand the Reds the lead in the second half but blazed the ball over the crossbar with an empty goal at his mercy.

The miss prompted criticism from some fans on social media, and Nunez responded with a post of his own, writing: "I wasn't the best three weeks ago, and I'm not the worst now. If I fall, I get up. You'll never see me give up. I'm going to give it my all until the last day I'm here in Liverpool. Resilience!"

Nunez faced some criticism from his boss after the match, with Reds head coach Arne Slot saying that the Uruguayan's work rate dipped following the missed chance.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Slot said: "I can accept every miss, especially from a player who has scored two very important goals against Brentford, and at home against Villa. I would prefer him to score, but the word chance says it all — it's a chance, so it's not 100 per cent sure that the ball goes in and players miss.

"I can accept the miss, but what is harder to accept is his behavior after that chance. It got too much in his head where he wasn't the usual Darwin that worked his ass off and helped the team, he was too disappointed.

"And maybe that's why he was just a fraction short the moment afterwards. I truly believe that it's the best to have [Wataru] Endo's mindset: he keeps on going and whenever we need him, he is ready. That is very difficult, there are not many players that can do this. It's not about the chance for me, it's more about the 20 minutes afterwards the mindset where I want to talk to him about."

Asked how he will attempt to keep Nunez's confidence high after the disappointing miss, Slot reiterated that the missed chance itself wasn't the main problem. "I will tell him how important he is, but the most important message is you can miss a chance, but you can't miss out on work rate," Slot added.

"That's a more important message. He will have missed a few chances in his career, and he will have scored a few as well. It's part of the job of a No.9, part of your life where you sometimes miss when people expect you to score, but it's not part of your job to slow down in work rate and that is something we will talk about."
